Look up a word in 20 different dictionaries and thesauruses at once!
Note: These are not a random selection of dictionaries. Every one of them has been carefully evaluated by a professional English educator, research expert, and educational resource specialist. Sites like Dictionary.com, Google.com, and many others are not in the list for a reason. We do not recommend using them if you want to correctly understand what a word means.

Tips:

  • Remember: Using a thesaurus is a 2-step process. Once you find a synonym, always look it up in a dictionary to see how it is used. Synonyms are similar words, not identical words.
  • Tip: Not every dictionary/thesaurus has every word.
  • Tip: Some phrasal verbs will only show up correctly if you search for the verb only (especially in Britannica).
    • eg. If you type “turn up” it will think you mean “turn-up” instead of “turn up” (which you can find by scrolling about 3/4 the page down). Remember, English does not usually hyphenate phrasal verbs.

Use our instant Flashcard Maker to study the words you just looked up!

(Note: These flashcards don’t work if you are using “night mode” or “dark mode,” BUT you can use a dark version of these flashcards by clicking the button below.)

How to Make the Flashcards:

1. Put one semicolon (;) or one equals sign (=) between a word and its definition.
  • Word; Definition
    • OR
  • Word = Definition

2. To add another word, put it on its own line OR put two semicolons (;;) OR two equals signs (==).
  • Word 1; Definition 1
  • Word 2; Definition 2
    • OR
  • Word 1; Definition 1 ;; Word 2; Definition 2
  • Word 1 = Definition 1 == Word 2 = Definition 2

3. Don’t put semicolons or equals signs in the definitions! It will not work!
  • ❌ Word; Definition with ; inside

4. Click “Make Flashcards.” (It will look empty at first because everything starts by being hidden. Click the checkboxes to see the words or definitions.)

Tip:

  • Save a copy of your words and definitions in the right format so you can quickly use this tool anytime!
  • Try saving it in your notes app or even emailing it to yourself.

How to Use the Flashcards

1. Click the checkbox at the top-left of the table to show all the words.

2. Start by reading the word and trying to remember its definition. Then, click the checkbox next to the definition to see the definition. Practice until you can remember the definitions without looking.

3. Now, do the opposite! Click the checkbox at the top-left of the table to HIDE all the words. Click the checkbox at the top in the middle to show all the definitions. Read the definitions and try to remember the word. Then, click the checkbox next to the word to see the word.

4. As you practice, click the “Randomize Rows” button to make sure you know each word well.

5. When you know a word (you can easily remember both the word and its definition), delete that word and its definition from the list at the top and click “Make Flashcards” again to remove the learned word from your practice.

In short:
  1. Click the top-left checkbox to show words.
  2. Try to remember each word's definition, then check to see it.
  3. Next, hide the words, show definitions, and try to remember the word.
  4. Use "Randomize Rows" to test your memory.
  5. Delete words you know and click "Make Flashcards" again.
